Founded in 1729, the Town of Bedford was initially a community of fifty households surviving on farming and requisite industries. Today it has retained both natural and architectural beauty and is home to a mix of business and industry with Middlesex Community College, a Veteran’s hospital and Hanscom Air Force Base employing some 23,000 persons. Visitors to Bedford find an attractive historic district and town common in the center, national historic landmarks, and a vibrant outdoor life including a swimming pond, a lake for boating, a bike path to Cambridge, and walking trails through conservation lands.

Bedford is located 15 miles northwest of Boston and 11 miles south of Lowell. The town is bordered by Billerica, Burlington, Lexington, Lincoln, Concord and Carlisle.

How do you get to Bedford?

Principal highways are State Routes 4, 62 and 225 and U.S Route 3. State Route 128 is accessible in neighboring Lexington. Bedford is a member of the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority (MBTA) which provides fixed route service to Alewife Station on the Red Line. Paratransit services for the elderly and disabled are also available through THE RIDE. Bedford Local Transit also privides transportation within the town.
